Jodi's review:

Initial thoughts:
I love IBBs, I was lucky and selected as one of the testers for these nappies while IBBs perfected their pocket pattern. Today I have a super cute bright blue care bears print pocket in my hands. The cotton used is a good quality fabric, feels thick and strong, PUL appears to be strong too, nice and thick, not crunchy and visibly well laminated. The inside microchamois is very soft and snowy white. Nappy has 4 rise settings in the front and is front snapping with 3 snaps to avoid wing droopage. The snaps are colour co-ordinated to the cotton print, mine are blue . Inside the pocket nappies have a bamboo doubler and a microfire trifold booster. The pocket opening is at the back.

After use:
Now let’s start by saying – I have not encountered many cotton outter nappies that we haven’t had a wicking problem with (wicking is when liquid (wee) travels across the fibres of a fabric – basically the outside of the nappy ends up wet) and the first few times Pie wore this nappy the outside got wet which I was so disapointed by cos I just love it BUT I was finding the absorbent layers were completely soaked (dripping) when I took it off so I put on my thinking cap and thought “Hmm, maybe these nappies are getting flooded rather than it being a wicking problem.” So I added an extra booster and low and behold – crisis averted.
Now don’t let that scare you off – Miss 18mo has to have an extra layer of absorbency in all her nappies these days – her b*cheeks have a bamboo or microfiber 3 layer insert squished in with the double fold bamboo insert, we use 2 long fold over inserts with snapped in boosters in her itti bittis and her CCs have a thick 3 layer microfibre insert (or 2!) plus 3-4 layers of bamboo minimum in them (and I’m not talking those microfleece inner bamboo outer inserts, these are heavy duty, 3 or 4 layers of bamboo, take 2 days to dry, ready to handle the 20 yr floods type inserts.) Luckily, my daughter was not ‘blessed’ with my giant booty and her slim frame can handle the extra junk in her MCN trunk. But like I said, she isn’t a normal wetter these days (but if your child is a bit like Pie then you can pick up heavy wetter inserts at Itty Bitty Bums too – just click here)
So anyway, once we got the right level of absorbency for princess piddle pants (she will kill me if she ever reads this blog!) we were in action. That’s when we got our next prolem – apparently the soft fluffy feel on microchamois against Pie’s cute little tushie sends a trigger straight to her bowels and I don’t need to tell you what comes next! It’s making it rather hard to get some really decent photos of her running around in this nappy for you all to see it in action. But I do have a few and will add some more if she is ever in it long enough to allow me to get the camera out ;)
The fit is really nice and would fit most newborns (unlike a lot of OSFM) – it says 3-20kg on their website and I think that sounds about right. Miss 10kg wears it on the large rise setting and the medium to large (depending how big her lunch was ;) tummy settings so there is plenty of room to grow for her and would fit a much bigger toddler. When it’s snapped to its smallest settings it makes my uterus skip a beat (similar to the affect tiny baby hats and booties and 00000 onesies have on a girl ;) The leg and waist elastic are a good fit too so we never have any thigh fall outs. The multiple rise adjustments make it really easy to get a good fit for just about any bubba's shape.

Jodi's review:
Initial thoughts:
When this little package arrived I was so impressed by the minky! I received a white and watermelon. The white is an off white, a gorgeous yummy creamy colour and the watermelon is a red with a slight pink tinge to it – it is definitely a neutral shade of red but not the normal bright red in my collection (so it stands out in the red section of the nappy shelf) – its just lovely! The minky is soft and feels like a good quality fabric should, its very luxurious to touch and the pile is thick and fluffy. The nappy has a black 'Rydees Australia' label on the middle of the back (see below), 3 snaps on the arms, and 2 rise setting snaps in the front. All snaps are white. The inside is lined in stay dry suede cloth to keep babies skin dry. The lay in booster is topped in the same suede cloth and stays place by snapping under an envelope flap at the back.

After use:
I personally was impressed with the fit of these nappies. My girl isn't huge, she wears an 0 (some 00s and some 1s) and still fits in quite a few medium nappies. The Rydees fit her with the arms meeting in the middle, as you can see in the pics below I could have unsnapped one side as they were quite snug but she was comfy. (Note the pics in the watermelon nappy with 1 snap gap in the middle - still a great fit on her) They look like they will definitely fit her until toilet training and would fit a bigger toddler well too. We had the rise settings snapped to the top layer of snaps – so another rise setting and a whole heap more arm snaps of growing room in these.
I kept them on her for a minimum of 3 hours and they held out beautifully, even the first wears we had no leaks and the only time we did have a leak was when my assistant (AKA DH) didn't do it up right - 12months of full time cloth up his sleeve but oh well ;)
The nappies dried reasonably quickly. The inserts contain bamboo which dries slower than microfibre and the built in layers mean its a little slower than a pocket nappy but a days sunshine and they were good to go again.
The inserts didn't have a label on them but can be washed and dried snapped to the nappy which makes them Daddy's laundry day friendly (and saves me having to tell him which inserts go with which nappy every time ;) and they have 3 arm snaps which stops wing droopages (and if you've read any of my reviews you will know that wing droopage is on the Jodi's pet hates list!) They also have an envelope back which stops the insides from hanging out the back (which I also hate so loved this feature!) They are a trim fit and definitely have enough space to add some extra boosting for a heavy wetter. We used them as day nappies only but I think with a few bamboo inserts in the back they could definitely be used for night use on most bubs too (or car trips!).
Rydees are manufactured in an ethically managed factory in China and Rydees Australia is an Aussie WAHM business.

Why I LOVE soap nuts!

Have you heard of soap nuts??? They are a much talked about topic on many pages I'm a part of and last week I discovered I could buy a trial pack from the lovely girls at Modern Cloth Nappies by Renee so I placed an order and eagerly awaited their arrival (which was super speedy, thanks MCNbR!). (Note, I have since purchased a big bag of them from Pure Revolution: Natural Soap Nuts and have been using them full time since August)
A few days later the postie arrived and  delivered them in my letter box so I grabbed them and made dash to the laundry to try them out... Well technically I went to the lounge room, opened my little parcel, read the directions so I knew what I was doing and THEN dashed to the laundry. We did a load of nappies with them and they came out really well, just like normal but without the washing powder smell - my bub smells good enough so it won't be missed around here!

Monday was washing day again - there are so many washing days with a bub in the house - and my gorgeous Kev did a few loads using the soap nuts - so they'd been through the wash 4 times when I went to do todays washing. I opened up the little bag (don't know how to use soap nuts??? you can find info on them here) and discovered that only 2 of the little half nuts (well berry type fruits actually) were spent, the rest were still good to keep washing :) So I threw the spent ones in the garden, added another soap nut and got down to some laundry :)

Todays washing loads included:

  • second hand toys that I've bought or been given. All a bit grubby but didn't want to put them in the washing machine with laundry detergent as I knew Pie would be mouthing them and surface cleaning them just wasn't doing a good enough job for my liking,
  • Pie's clothes,
  • Pie's food covered bibs - my little gutso gobbles her solids so quick and likes to push anything that falls out back in with her fingers then suck on them for a bit so she makes a lovely mess,
  • The wrap we were using to swaddle her in over the weekend which she's sucked on and spat on (we've now gone wrap free)
  • Pie's nappies, inserts and wipes from yesterday - all wet, no soiled ones.
Now, don't judge me, but with all that I had enough for one big load so I did one big load - nappies, clothes, toys all together with half a dozen or so half soap nut shells. Put it on a heavy duty wash and pressed GO :)

When the load finished Pie was just waking from her morning catnap so I took the picnic rug and some toys outside and we had a play in the sunshine while I hung the new load and got the load husband did yesterday off the line (we only get sun on our line very first thing in the morning so have to leave it over night most of the time to get it properly dried and get the sunshine on it... Oh and I'd forgotten Kev did a load yesterday afternoon so make that 5 loads the soap nuts had done with only 2 needing to be replaced!!!) and folded up the clothes. It was so lovely that I've decided I need a laundry day bag to hang in my laundry ready to take outside while Pie and I enjoy the sunshine together - it will have toys and baby sunscreen and wipes for emergencies and ofcourse a hat. Speaking of hats, today she wore a baby bonnet I made for her months ago that was way too big, I can't believe it fits!!! I was so proud seeing something else I made on her <3
So anyway back to the topic - soap nuts. The washing today really surprised me! I was already sold on soap nuts but today they outdid themselves. There were white singlets and rompers in there that had been looking a bit grey and they were suddenly sparkling white!!! There were pink tights that had a yuckky tinge to them after smthg ran in the washing and they were bright and looked brand new again! The toys were all spotless! The bibs didn't have a sign of food remaining on them :) If I wasn't won over earlier I sure was now! Soap nuts, I love you!!!

Nappy Review - Seedling Baby Sizeless pocket nappy with snaps

Seedling baby nappy review from November 2011 - keep your eyes out for an update of this post with new fitting info and other stuff seedling baby are working on at their blog :)

So I decided that I might use this blog to talk some more about nappies and even review some of the nappies I've tried. I'm going to start with my latest newby, the seedling baby sizeless which is a osfm (one size fits most) pocket nappy with snaps (luckily - as Miss Pie thinks velcro is great fun to pull open at the moment!)

Now I was lucky enough to score this nappy for FREE when Seedling Baby did some very very generous giveaways recently but I've been eyeing them for months wanting to buy one! I think its the gingham that really drew me - its just so dang cute and unique!!!! And I've been tossing up between the red and the black, (even though I have maybe 8 black nappies and 6 red nappies!!!!) but the gorgeous freebie I got was yellow! This actually works out perfectly as I would have never bought yellow and it is gorgeous and Pie looks awesome in yellow too, see:

So a little about the nappy as described at seedlingbaby.com.au:
The Seedling Baby Sizeless Pocket nappy is a one-size modern cloth nappy designed with busy parents in mind. While we haven’t reinvented the wheel, we did want to develop a nappy that is simple to use by Mum, Dad, Grandma and carers.
We realized there was a niche in the market for a pocket style one-size, double-gusseted nappying system that is simple to use, effective, fast drying, cute and affordable.
We like to give you, the primary nappy-changer, the option of closure type, so our nappies are available in either snap or hook and loop (Velcro) closure.
We think gingham goes with anything and our first four colours are gender neutral, with more gender specific colours set for release throughout 2011.

(Note: now have all 3 other colours headed my way - Jodi 16/11/2011)

So now for my say: lets start with the outside -
The fabric is lovely! Seriously, my mum has been raving about this nappy since she laid eyes and hands on it! A gorgeous crisp gingham in an almost mustard yellow and white with matching yellow trim. It has 4 height or rise settings and a double row of snaps around the waist to stop wing droopage (Hallelujah cos I hate wing droopage and think double snaps make them fit so much nicer!) It elasticated at the legs and back but not the front so it sits very flat at the front. The crotch is fairly trim so it fits really well and although I didn't bother hiding putting it under clothes, it looks trim enough to fit nicely in pants.

The gusset is the first one like it thats I've ever seen - don't get me wrong, I'm not saying its the only gusset like this in a nappy, its just the only one I've seen! Its deep - about an inch at the deepest point so it hugs thighs beautifully to avoid legs leaks, but on the inside its also really soft, so the gussets dont leave nasty red marks from all the work they are doing keeping those chubby/skinny/inbetweeny thighs dry! And the entire nappy is lined with the same extra soft, snuggly, white fabric - I just wish I could curl up and have a snooze in the lining of this nappy, its so, so soft!!! Inside we find a pocket and when you reach in and pull out the contents of that pocket you will find not 1 but 2 bamboo cotton blend inserts: 1 long hour glass shaped insert and a snap on piggy back booster. And let me tell you, they are soft and fluffy and look to be thick and thirsty!!! I can't say too much about the absorbency yet - Pie only had hers on about an hour and a half when she decided to christen that lovely fluffy crisp white lining! And of course Mummy forgot to put a flushable liner in when she was too busy admiring the beautiful lining while we put this one on :(
Now the one thing that I will say is that the boosters are quite tight to get in. But I don't really see this as a negative - the entire inside of the nappy is full when you use both inserts (and even with just the one it would be filled to the edges perfectly as its the perfect width) so there is none of the sliding around you can get with some inserts and pocket nappies, it stays firmly in place doing exactly what you want it to be doing! It just takes a little practice to get the inserts in, nice and flat, but there is an instructional video on seedling baby's website if you get really stuck! Also the opening of the pocket doesnt have an extra flap to close it off completely which I wasn't a fan of when I first saw this. But I soon came around, its sewn so well that the pocket edges stay together nicely and theres no worries of the inserts crawling up the back as can happen with some pockets.

Over all, I am a HUGE fan of this nappy and have decided I want it in ALL the colours!!! And right now there is a fabulous XMas pack available at Seedling baby retailers which includes 1 red and 1 green seedling baby sizeless pocket nappy, bundled together with a gift tag and candy cane (so its ready for gifting!) for just $30 - I think that these 2 seedling nappies along with the itti bitti galaxy limited ed print will have Pie all sorted for Xmas nappies :) We've got them all heading our way from the lovely people at www.rascalrumps.com.au (Plus I've made her one and will probably make another 1 or 2 so we can be sure she will be covered for the entire day :)

Nappy Review - B Cheeks One Size Nappies

Here's a review of Bum Cheeks I did back in November for anyone who hasn't tried them out before :)

Tonight I'm going to be talking about B cheeks - which I also love - if you're looking for bad reviews then this isn't the blog to go to BUT my reviews are honest ones so don't think they are just crap, I just don't review products I'm unimpressed by :)

I was lucky to discover B Cheeks when Daily Baby Buys had the PUL ones for half price - I got the VHC (cos I love the VHC) and as soon as I got it I wished I'd gotten the dotty one too cos its such a great user friendly nappy.

Here's what the website says:

"New BumCheeks One Size Embroidered Nappies will fit your baby from birth right through to Toilet training!
Made from beautiful printed PUL, exclusive to Bumcheeks these nappies have a layer of waterproof PUL inside and a soft suede cloth lining. The pocket has two hidden layers of  fast drying micrfibre and a fold over 2 layer Bamboo Insert. 1 row of 10 snaps and 2 Rise settings mean that they have a large variation in size, 3 snaps on the arms means no wing droop. Soft elastic legs do not leave marks on even the chunkiest thighs. 4-16"

So now for my say: lets start with the outside -

I am now the proud owner of the PUL very hungry caterpillar, the orange minky embroidered VHC and the pink minky embroidered VHC. The embroidered nappies have been discontinued so I won't bother discussing the embroidery (except to say that the VHC is adorabley bright - but you can see that in the pics below!) As mentioned on the website - they have 3 snaps on the arms, this was the first feature I noticed and it made me so happy - wing droopage drives me crazy! The nappy has 3 rise settings and a single row of snaps around the tummy (and as discussed - 3 snaps per arm!). Its elasticated at the back and legs and is front snapping. The back elastic pulls it in really nice and tightly over the butt and its not a very bulky nappy.

Fabrics - the minky colours are so bright! when I opened my package of embroidered VHC I was blown away by the colours and the first thing I told my husband was that they were the brightest coloured nappies I'd seen. He later spotted them hanging on the line and even he commented on how bright they were. The embroidered ones I have, have a thin band of cotton fabric (in this case the VHC spot fabric) across the back of the nappy and spreading down each arm (see below). This is really well stitched and placed to sit nicely both when the nappy is stretched to fit the biggest bubs and cinched in to fit the tiny ones too - and adds a lovely contrast to the look of the nappy.

The PUL is sturdy and soft to touch without feeling too plasticy like some PULs - the print is good too.

And now for the inside:
The inside layer is suede cloth. This nappy has a hidden stitched in booster - so its like an AIO with a pocket to add extra boosting power! The hidden microfibre layers are soft and fluffy and if you had to you could use it briefly without the bamboo inserts cos they would soak up a fair bit of wee.
The pocket is a good stitched down envelope pocket which has enough cross over to keep things concealed and is low enough that you don't have to worry about Daddy or Nanny putting the nappy on with the pocket flaps hanging out over the back!
The insert is a long fold over bamboo insert which snaps together to make it easier to insert and leaves you with 4 layers of bamboo (plus the 2 layers of microfibre - its a thirsty nappy!)
Having the fold over insert makes it faster to dry but the nappy shell with the hidden layers of absorbency is a little slower to dry than pocket nappies that don't have this - but faster to dry than your average AIO. If I put them on my drying rack indoors I have to turn them inside outwards and then flip them over a few hours later, to let everything dry - on the line with a bit of a breeze they usually dry fine throughout the day.

The fit:

(Photograph of my beautiful girl by Willowtree moments) Although these nappies don't have gussets or thigh snaps they fit snuggly around Pie's thighs - and they fit well when her thighs were much skinnier too. They sit a little higher than some nappies (Pipers on the shortest rise setting and is 9mo, 8.15kg and 70cm tall) and they are so thirsty that they can go quite a while without changing - they are a fave for shopping days as they usually see us through the whole trip! You can also buy trifold boosters to use your BCheeks nappies for night nappies (or for really heavy wetters). Plus with the pocket style you add as many inserts as you need to.

Styles - B Cheeks do plain minky colours, denim with cotton printed bands and pul nappies. I haven't tried the plain minky or the denim but from their description I think they are made to the same pattern as the PUL and embroidereds. They also make a newborn cover but I've only seen this on their site. Their current christmas nappies are apliqued minky so I'm crossing my fingers that they might replace the embroidered with appliqued but only time will tell. (Uodate - they have some gorgeous ocean apliques out at the moment, the shark one is adorable!)

Our New Blog space :)

Hello MCN Lovers,
Well I've been a bad bad blogger on my personal blog - its been months since my last post!!!! And up until today I've been doing all my blogs in one place - my private stuff, my sewing and crafting attempts and my cloth adventures but I've been asked to do a few cloth nappy reviews so I thought it was about time that MCN Lovers got their own blog.
I'll be posting any cloth product reviews I do here (nappies, mumma pads, and other cloth related stuff - if you want me to check out your product just contact me now), using this as a place to run comps for our facebook page and sharing other things that MCN lovers will want to read.
This coming week I will be featuring a review of an Aussie WAHMs nappies and she is planning a sale so if you like what you read you can grab your own at a great price! I'll be transferring posts from my own blog to here so its all in one place and I will try and encourage business owners to share some monthly specials and stocking info with me in advance so I can create a monthly calendar post (its all a work of love tho and my real job is raising my beautiful daughter and caring for our home so this will all be a work in progress!)
Please drop in from time to time, follow me, share your own cloth blogs that I can add to our favourites list and feel free to contact me to contribute :)
